Claudio Monteverdi’s works are from the 1950s a new classic in the repertoire . His fortune and revival started in the 1920s, captivating the simpathy and interest of composer Mailipero and poet D’annunzio. This outstanding duo used his poetics as a paradigma of the union of words and music in the italian language. Malipiero pursued a total edition of the composer’s works also. Modern performances were staged at the time. Also the german composer Carl Orff, set Monteverdi’s music in a modernized version for the theatre, creating some kind of a trittico with parts from Orfeo, Arianna and Il ballo delle ingrate, evoking his idea of musical tragedy.
